The vending machine on Ward 9 had been swallowing Maureen's change since midnight, and by half past three she had stopped arguing with it. She sat at the station with a cold tea and the stuffed cat that a girl called Priya had left on the bed when she went home that afternoon. It had a pink bow on one ear and a felt tummy worn bald from being hugged, and it had waited on the desk all shift for someone to claim it.

Nobody did. The bay lights dimmed to their night setting and the monitors kept their small arguments going down the corridor. Maureen turned the cat over and checked for a phone number, but found only a faded washing label and a name stitched in blue thread. Priya was eight. She had cried at the lift, not because she was leaving but because the cat had been packed in the wrong bag, and she had made everyone promise it would be looked after.

Around four, Ferdy the porter came past with the linen trolley and stopped at the desk. He looked at the cat, then at her. "You'll ring the number on that, won't you?" "There's no number," she said. "Then you'll have to take it yourself," he said, and went off whistling.

So at seven she tucked the cat under her arm, walked out through the revolving doors into the grey car park, and drove to the address on the discharge sheet. The porch light was still on. Priya opened the door in her pyjamas, saw the cat, and grinned so wide her gap showed. The cat raised one felt paw towards her, as if it had been expecting her all along.
