Two cartoon lions in a heart with a bow

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon lions, one with its head resting against the other, framed inside a pink outlined heart. The heart is tied at its base with a red bow. The linework is bold and dark, with flat colour fills in orange, pink, green and red and soft grey shading in the background behind the lions. The design sits centrally on a smooth, lightly tanned limb, with a sliver of a hand or foot visible at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ribbon had been snagged on a thorn for three weeks before Oru decided it belonged to him. It was red, the colour of the sunset that sat on the far side of the pass, and it fluttered from the acacia like a flag nobody had planted. Ama saw him reaching for it from the rocks and pounced before his paw touched the silk, pinning the end under her own.

"Finders are keepers," she said.

"I found it first."

"You found it looking at it. That's different."

They argued the way cubs do, loudly and without much hope of winning, until the wind came over the ridge and carried the ribbon clean off its branch. It went spinning out over the scree, twisting like something alive, and both of them ran. Oru reached it first, but Ama landed on his back, and together they rolled into a drift of dry grass with the ribbon caught between them.

When they finally sat up, dusty and laughing, neither of them wanted to let go. Ama tied one end around her ear and Oru tied the other around his tail, and the knot slipped every time they moved. So they stayed still, side by side, watching the storm grey the hills behind the pass until the first drops began to fall.

Years later the ribbon was gone, worn to threads by seasons of sun, but the two of them still sat that way on the flat rock above the pass, heads together, while the rain came up the valley and the grass turned green beneath them.
