The frost came down on Hollin Farm in the week after Candlemas and would not lift. Ada Pennick said it was the coldest ground she had walked in seventy winters, and she had walked a good deal of it. Her grandson Tom, who was nine and had never once been told no about anything he could push, went into the shed and dragged out the old green mower that nobody had run since the Coronation.

He pushed it out across the yard, where the grass had gone white and brittle. The blades went through the frost with a crisp crunch, and each pass left a stripe of green showing under the white, like a path worn through snow. Neighbours came to the gate to watch. Mr Harrold from the lower farm leaned on the top bar and said the lad had lost his wits. Tom kept on, cap pulled low, walking the slope toward the oak and back again.

By dusk the yard was striped like a hayfield in July, and the ewes came out bleating to nibble at the green patches, puzzled and pleased in equal measure. Ada came out with a lantern, looked for a long while, and said nothing. Then she went indoors and came back with two mugs of cocoa, one of which she gave to Tom, who was too tired to lift it.

The frost held another fortnight. When it finally lifted, it lifted off the stripes first, and the grass beneath stood up green in the exact shape of a boy's walk across the yard.
