Cartoon figure with star on the back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a simple cartoon figure with curly hair, a smiling face, two raised fists and a star on its chest. It is drawn in a thin, uniform black outline with no shading, and the interior is left as bare skin. The figure sits centrally in the frame against a plain background of skin, with the edge of a white cloth visible at the lower right.

Harold had been losing to the magpies since March, and by July he had started taking it personally. The scarecrow his late wife had built from an old boiler suit and two broom handles stood at the end of the runner beans, its curly rope hair bobbing, fists raised like a man who had never once been knocked down. The birds did not care. They strutted along the fence rail, looked him in the eye, and took the redcurrants one by one.

On the Saturday, his grandson Tom came up the allotment path with a tin of yellow paint and a stiff brush nicked from school. "You need a bit of spirit, Grandad," he said, and set about the scarecrow's chest with a star the size of a saucer. Harold watched him work and said nothing about the wonky points, because the boy was eleven and very proud of them.
By evening the scarecrow had its star, a wide grin, and a pair of fists that looked, to Harold's squinting eye, far more dangerous than they had any right to be. The magpies sat on the rail and considered it. The boldest hopped down to the fence post, tilted its head, and sidled off without a single currant.
The next morning the bushes were still bare and the scarecrow still stood there, fists up, grinning at nothing. Tom said the birds had been defeated. Harold said nothing, but he bought a second tin of yellow paint and put it on the shelf in the shed, ready for next year.
