Cartoon Mario in raccoon suit on an arm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon character in a red raccoon suit with brown ears and a striped tail, mid-motion with one arm raised. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat red fills, pale skin-toned areas for the face and hands, and dark brown and grey shading on the ears and tail. The design is centred on the skin with a small black stroke below the figure.

The tail had come unstitched in Cardiff, so Dilys sewed it back on by the light of a caravan lamp, using fishing line because the wardrobe trunk was padlocked and the key had gone somewhere under the last of the canvas. Four stripes of brown felt, one grey. She bit the thread off and held the suit up to the window. Outside, the big top sagged like an old horse, and the fairground lights across the car park were already switched off to save money.

Harker counted the takings on the step of the ticket wagon. Thirty-one people had come to the Friday show, and eleven of them were the school party who had got in free. He did not say the number out loud. He only tapped the ledger twice, the way he did when a horse had gone lame, and went to find the boy.
Teodor was already warm. He stood on the springboard in the red suit with the brown ears pinned flat, and when the drum rolled he went up in one long clean arc, one arm flung out as if he were pointing at something far off, the tail streaming behind him. For a second the whole tent forgot the cold and the sawdust and the smell of wet tarpaulin. Then he landed, the striped tail swung round, and a little dark scuff of dust rose where his heel had struck.
After the last song, Dilys went out to fold the stage cloths. The tail was lying in the sawdust where it had torn free again. She picked it up, shook it once, and saw the tiny black mark on the ground beside it, the exact shape of the boy's shoe. She left it there. Someone would sweep it in the morning, or the rain would, and by then the town would have forgotten it had ever been a circus at all.
