Galaxy mushroom on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a mushroom with a white face and two black eyes sits on the forearm. Its cap is filled with a blue, purple and pink galaxy pattern, and loose green and purple watercolour-style splashes spread around the outline. The photo is taken close up against a tiled floor and dark surface, with the design centred on the skin.

Dear Maud, The bilge pump has been going since Tenerife and the galley is damp enough to grow anything, which is how the mushroom came about. I'd kept a tin of dried porcini in the locker under the sink, forgotten it, and when I opened it in the dark last Tuesday there was a little white knob pushing up through the lid, the colour of a boiled egg. By morning it had a cap the size of a shilling, and by Friday it was the size of a saucer.

Nobody believes me about the colour. Under the lamp it is plain cream, but when Jonesy carried the tin up on deck at midnight and the sky was clear over the Atlantic, the cap took the stars and kept them. Blue like the inside of a mussel shell, pink where the sea goes pink at dawn, and spatters of green and violet thrown out past the edge as if someone had flicked a brush at it. The bosun called it a sea-galaxy. You're drunk on the rum ration, I told him.
I've been tipping a teaspoon of seawater on it every evening, which I know is nonsense, and it has not died yet. Tomorrow we raise the Azores and the agent will ask what's in the tin. I'll tell him it's stores.
Keep the spare jar for me. I'll bring you a cap when I'm home, dried and pressed flat, and you can tell me whether the colour's still there. Love, Ada
