Pixel art Pokémon trainer and Pikachu on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two pixel art characters sit side by side: a trainer in a red cap and blue top on the left, and a yellow Pikachu with red cheeks on the right. The blocky, stepped outlines are built from square pixels in black, with flat areas of red, blue and yellow. The tattoo wraps around the ankle and is photographed against a crinkled plastic sheet.

Sit closer, the lamp is failing and I will not tell this twice, because every second telling loses a square or two. You want to know about the boy with the red cap and the yellow creature who would not walk beside him unless it could ride on his shoulder. Brother Osric swore he saw them come up the valley road in the year the bell cracked, and Osric never lied except about the size of fish.

The boy was called Teodor and the creature was called Sparrow, though it was no bird and had cheeks like two coals. Everything about them was made of squares. The brothers argued for a week whether the Lord would build a thing with such stepped edges, and decided He would, if He meant to teach the eye patience. Teodor's blue coat stopped at hard corners. Sparrow's ears were little black steps going up to a point.
Then came the marsh below Saint Oswin's, where the stones were laid in a grid and the water rose between them. A stone that was not a stone would drown you. In the fog Teodor lost the path and stood still, and Sparrow leapt off his shoulder and was gone into the grey. For a long hour there was only the sound of the reeds. Then a small light blinked on the far side, once, twice, like a lamp being lit in a window.
When they reached the gate, Teodor pulled off his cap and gave it to the porter, who did not understand it, and Sparrow curled on the warm step and went to sleep. Brother Osric counted the squares on the lintel stone that night, one black block for every step the boy had taken, and he said the number was never the same twice. That is the whole of it. Now bank the fire, and mind the cracked bell on your way out.
