Cartoon figures and TARDIS tattoos on skin

Other · Colour · Photo

The left panel shows two cartoon figures, one with blond hair in a green jacket and blue tie and one with dark hair in a long coat and blue scarf, standing on green grass against a blue wash. The right panel shows a blue TARDIS and a deerstalker hat above two suited cartoon figures, one holding a small bottle, on a blue watercolour wash. The bold outlines are black and the fills are soft, flat colour with a loose wash behind the figures.

Nobody else on Gull Quay believed the crab pots were moving, so Oswin Pell had to say so twice: once in the Anchor, where he tapped his deerstalker against the bar, and again on the slipway at six, with his long grey scarf wound up to his nose against the drizzle.

"Pots don't walk, Mags," said Dev, who had brought a flask of tea and a bottle of brown sauce for reasons he never explained. "Tide shifts them."

"Tide doesn't leave wet footprints on the boards," Pell said, crouching over the planks with his lens. "Look. Size of a man's brogue, and the heel's been dragged. Someone is lifting them one at a time and setting them back crooked."

We spent the evening in the blue hut at the end of the pier, the one that had been a telephone box once and was now stacked with rope and bait. Pell hung his coat on a nail, glared at the tide table as though it had lied to him personally, and said nothing for an hour. Dev poured tea. The hut ticked as it cooled.

At half past eleven the lamp in the harbour office went dark, and a small figure came down the steps carrying something bright in both hands. It was Harriet Coyle's grandson, in his pyjamas and wellingtons, a sprat in each fist. He looked up at the hut, saw Pell's silhouette in the window, and waved. Pell wrote in his notebook afterwards, under the heading "Case Closed": Bring the lad a proper fish tomorrow. Don't wait up.
