The crate was stamped FRAGILE in four languages, and the frog inside it was not fragile at all. It sat on the loading dock of Halcyon Reach with its enormous round eyes fixed on me, pink cheeks glowing, its striped jumper creased from the trip. I had been told to log the consignment as ornamental ceramics. I did not log anything, because by then it had hopped onto my clipboard and was reading the manifest over my shoulder.

Its name was Dob, or so the sticker on its belly claimed. A widow on the lower rings had paid our firm a small fortune to carry a sealed letter to the moon colony at Tessaly Deep, and nobody had thought to mention that the colony was shuttered during the last reorganisation. Dob had not been informed either. On the first night out, it spent six hours on the cold rail of the cargo bay, staring through the porthole at the stars with the patient disappointment of someone who expects a train that is late.

We reached Tessaly Deep to find the cradles dark and the docking ring rusted shut. I was ready to turn us around until Dob marched to the hatch, rapped on it twice with one webbed hand, and waited. When I finally cracked the seal, the letter inside was not for the colony at all. It was addressed in faded blue ink to Dob, and it said: take him somewhere he can see the sea, and I am sorry I was cross about the stripes. Dob tucked the paper under his arm, sat down on the threshold and looked up at me as if I was the one who had got the address wrong.
