Cartoon creature with 3D glasses on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon creature with a rounded white body, short stubby feet and a brown outline sits at the centre of the design. It wears red and blue 3D glasses, a red bow tie and a red fez-style hat, with simple line work and flat fills. The tattoo is shown on a pale forearm against a patterned fabric background, with the figure filling most of the frame.

The last reel had snapped twice by the time the creature came up the projection booth stairs, which was not the strangest thing to happen at the Palladian that winter. It stood on the top step no taller than my knee, round and white as a bar towel, with a red fez tipped at an angle and a bow tie to match. In one flipper it held a pair of cardboard 3D glasses, one lens blue and one red. It looked at me the way Mr Haddow looked at the takings on a wet Tuesday.

I said the screening was over. It shook its head, tapped the glasses, then tapped the booth window, which looks down over Tallow Lane and the wet roofs beyond. I had run that projector for eleven years and never once been asked for anything but the film on the bill. Still, I took the glasses. Through the blue lens the streetlamps went thin and sharp. Through the red the rain turned the colour of tinned peaches and the buses crawled past like beetles with lit windows.
With both eyes open the city went flat and strange. People on the pavement walked with their shadows pulled out in front of them like dogs on leads, and the canal looked like a strip of tin foil someone had dropped. The creature hopped onto the rewind bench, straightened its bow tie and pointed at the empty auditorium below. I cut the house lights, threaded a blank leader through the gate and ran it, white and endless, across the screen.
I sat in the dark with the glasses on and watched that blank light until the reel ran out. When I took the glasses off the creature had gone, and only a small damp print was left on the bench where it had been sitting. I still have the glasses. On nights when the bus lights are too bright I put them on, and the city goes thin again, and I catch a white shape at the edge of the frame, fez tilted, waiting for me to sit down.
