The night the Carrow Street clock stopped, Nell Pardoe stood in the middle of the cobbles with her arms flung out, because her brother Tom had said nobody in the town could make the bells answer. Her jacket was two sizes too big and had been her mother's. The lamps were lit along the wall, and the pigeons had gone quiet on the chimney pots.

She took a breath that seemed to go down to her boots, and then she opened her mouth as wide as it would go and let the whole street hear her. Every shutter on the row rattled. Gulls came off the roofs of the tannery in a grey sheet. Two men on the bridge stopped singing halfway through a hymn they had no business knowing, and a dog under the coal cart howled back at her. Her pleated skirt snapped against her legs like a flag, and the laces on her shoes came undone one after the other.
Mrs Greaves came out from the clockmaker's in her nightdress with a candle in each hand. She said the clock had been holding its breath since the fire of 1871, when the foreman's daughter had run into the yard and never been found, and that a clock can only let go of a held breath when somebody shouts loud enough to shame it. Nell did not know whether this was true. She only knew the hands jerked forward, and the bells began again, slightly out of time.
In the morning the clock ticked as if nothing had happened. Tom said he could still hear the shout when he lay awake, and Nell said that was only the bells, and went to sit on the wall with her arms out, just in case the town needed her again.
