A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming down Hollin Market since seven, and Ruth Okonedo had given up keeping her paperbacks dry. She was sorting a crate of cinema leftovers the council had dumped on her pitch, lifting out a pair of red and blue 3D glasses with one cracked arm. "Nobody's wanted those since the eighties," called her brother Tomas from under the awning, but she slid them on anyway and squinted at the grey sky.

Through the lenses the drizzle split into streaks, every drop a little ribbon of red and blue, and the stalls down the row seemed to lean in as if they were listening. A man in a crumpled grey coat stopped at her table and picked up a tin of pears. He turned it over, then ran a thumb along the glasses on her face. "Allons-y," he said quietly, to nobody in particular, and went red to the ears. He paid in ten pence pieces that had clearly been in his pocket for years.

He came back the next Saturday with a bow tie folded into his jacket pocket and asked whether she still had the glasses. She didn't, not really. She had put them on the windowsill above the kettle, where the afternoon light came through the grimy glass. He stood there in the drip from the gutter, peering at them without touching, and Ruth wondered whether a stranger could be homesick for a place he had only ever seen on the telly. Then the rain started again, running down the window in long crooked lines, and every drop still split into red and blue.
