Line drawing of a face in 3D glasses on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A single-weight black outline drawing shows a stylised face with tousled hair, wearing 3D glasses with a blue left lens and a red right lens. A curved, open smile sits beneath the face, with no shading or fill beyond the two coloured lenses. The tattoo is centred on the calf against a plain, pale background.

I have spent two nights with a steel rule and a pot of paint trying to make the whole village look less peculiar.

The hall holds ninety if the fire door stays shut. On Saturday a boy in a school jumper asked me why the picture had a crooked grin hanging in the middle of it, floating under the glasses like a cat that had lost its owner. I told him it was the interval card. He did not believe me, and neither did I, because the card was printed in Hull and had no grin on it at all. I had drawn that smile myself the night before, in one unbroken pen line, while the reel jammed and the audience stamped their feet.
Tell Mum I am eating properly. Tell her the projector bulb has lasted longer than I deserved. The last reel ran at half past nine, and when I wound it back the grin was still on the screen, sitting in the dark between the frames exactly where I left it. Nobody has asked for it back. I think I might leave it up for the winter.
