Outlined face in 3D glasses on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black line drawing shows a head with tousled hair, a pair of 3D glasses with a blue left lens and a red right lens, and a curved grin or beard-like line below. The linework is a single even weight with no shading, and only the two lenses are filled with colour. The design sits centrally on the lower leg against plain skin, with a dark garment visible at the bottom edge.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire won't warm the back row. The year the ferry stopped running on Sundays, a man came over from the mainland with a canvas bag and a projector that smelt of burnt dust. Mr Aldous Penhale, he called himself, though nobody on Carrick ever learned what he was before the pictures. He said he would show us the moving world in the field behind the chapel, for a shilling and a bit of mutton.

Most of the island came. Old Morag brought her own stool and sat through the first reel complaining about the light. Then Penhale handed out spectacles, two bits of card with coloured cellophane, one blue and one red, and told us to put them on and hold still. The picture leapt off the sheet at us. A dog came over the wall and into my lap, and I swear to you my own mother flinched.
Here is the part they never put in the newspapers. The lad who drove the cart, Tam Gillies, with his hair stood up like a wet gull, wouldn't take his glasses off. He kept them on through the second film, through the dark, through the fiddle. When we asked why, he said the world looked better with one eye on the sea and the other on the sky, and he had been trying to make them meet all his life.
Penhale packed up that night and the boat took him away with the projector wrapped in a sail. Tam followed him the next spring with the glasses still on, grinning like a man who had found the joke. Some say he runs a picture house in Glasgow now. I say he's still out there with his blue eye on the water, waiting for the red one to catch up.
