He had a pair of spectacles with one lens red as a robin's chest and the other blue as ice on the trough, and he wore them even indoors. Mrs Ashdown laughed at him until he showed her what they did. Look through them, he said, and the hay barn is two barns, one set just a little behind the other, and if you wait long enough the second one becomes the one you were hoping for. She waited. It was the barn she had lost her husband's cart in, back before the flood, standing whole with its doors open and the lamp lit.

Now, the trouble with those glasses is that they only show you the second barn while you're looking, and they never tell you which of the two is the real one. Old Pritchard tried to keep them. He wanted both barns for himself and he wanted them to stay, so he sat in the hayloft with the glasses on until the frost took hold of his boots and he could not stand to climb down.

The coat man came back the next winter, same coat, same backwards walk. He took the glasses off, set them on our table, and said, that's the price of looking twice. Nobody argued with him about it again. Mind the stove now. Go on to bed.
