Dear Win, you will not believe what came up the back stairs on Tuesday. Mrs Pargeter in the front room had lost her blue silk bow, the one she wears to chapel, and we had the whole house turned out for it. Mr Dunmore searched under the piano. The cook swore it was the draught. Nobody thought to look under the cushion of the sea-chair on the landing, where a small tan kitten was lying on its back, bow clamped in both paws like a prize herring.

We never had a cat at Brine Cottage, as you know, because Father said the gulls would be enough trouble. But this one came in off the harbour wall in the rain, thin as a bootlace, and would not be shifted. It has a face like a startled loaf and a tail that goes up like a question mark. It follows whichever guest is least fond of it, which I am beginning to think is its idea of a joke.

Mrs Pargeter came down to breakfast on Wednesday with a fresh ribbon, a plain grey one, and said nothing about the blue. The kitten sat under her chair the whole meal and washed one ear with great dignity. Whether she knew who had it, I cannot say, but she has asked me twice since whether the cat is staying on.

I have told her yes. I have also put a saucer of milk by the back door, and I've moved the blue bow to the top of the wardrobe, which I'm told is where cats keep their treasures. Come at Whitsun. Bring your good scissors, the ones with the bird handles, and we will see if we can make something of this creature before the season ends.
