They arrived on Tuesday with a basket and a chihuahua called Biscuit no bigger than a loaf, and by Thursday the whole house was run by him. He sleeps on the warm end of the boiler cupboard and has decided the lodger in number four is his.

Last Saturday the rain got into the bay window and Mr Ansty, who has the room with the damp wallpaper, came down to breakfast in a rage about the sea. Biscuit trotted across the lino, lifted one forepaw onto the sill like a man checking a tide table, and held it there with his ears straight up as though the weather owed him an apology. The whole dining room went quiet. Even the gulls outside seemed to be watching.

Mrs Pell says it is the proudest she has ever seen him, and I have stopped arguing. I cut a paper silhouette of him from the back of the laundry bill, ears and tail just so, and pinned it above the sideboard. Ansty has asked whether he may take it home. I told him he may have it when he pays his arrears.
