Cat outline tattoo on a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous outline of a seated cat, with its head turned and tail curling round the base of the palm. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading, and the ink is dark grey to black with a slight purple cast along the tail. The hand is photographed against a dark leather surface, with a patterned knitted garment visible in the background.

Mrs Ada Pennock had a rule about the pen. You do not lift it. Not for a cough, not for the kettle, not for the young man from the council who came to measure the shop window. She told me this on my first morning at the sign-writing shop on Harbour Row, and I thought she was joking until I watched her draw a cat in a single breath, its head turned over one shoulder as if someone had called its name from the pier.

The cat became the shop's mark. Her late husband had painted the board above the door, Pennock and Daughter, but the cat was hers, and she drew it on the back of every invoice, never once in the same place twice. Its tail always curled round something: a bollard, a teacup, the corner of a page. When customers asked why it never had a second line, she said a cat that does not finish its thought is a cat that keeps its options open.
Ada died in February, in a hospital bed with the window open onto the gulls. Afterwards I found a ledger in the back drawer with forty years of cats in it, and on the last page an outline still unfinished, the tail wandering off the edge of the paper as though it had somewhere better to be.
I tried it for a week. My hand kept stopping at the ear. On the Friday I drew the cat again, its tail curling round the word Daughter on the board, and I let the line run out past the edge of the paper, which is the only way I know to say I was not going to lift the pen.
