The fishermen of Porthkelly swore the white cat had come in on the tide the winter the lifeboat was lost. Nobody owned her. She sat on the quay wall with her back to the sea and her head turned over one shoulder, as if someone had just called her name from the harbour steps and she was deciding whether to answer.

Mags Tonkin kept the net loft at the top of the slip, and she was the first to notice the bows. A pink ribbon appeared on the mooring rope of every boat that came home safe, tied in a neat double loop. Nobody admitted to doing it. The cat watched from the wall with her blue eyes half shut, pleased with herself, and when the wind got up she was never blown off the stones.

Then in March the Gull Ellen did not come back on the evening tide. Mags went down to the slip with a lamp and found the cat already there, sitting very upright at the edge of the water. A second ribbon, larger than the first, was knotted tight around her neck. She stood, turned her head towards the dark Atlantic, and walked straight into the surf without looking back.

The boat limped in at dawn with a split mast and three men soaked to the bone. Mags swore she saw a white shape on the bow, guiding them past the Dog Rock. Ever after, the fishermen tied a pink ribbon on the first boat out each morning, and no one in Porthkelly ever asked them why.
