Nobody had touched the north wall of Shelter Nine since the spring rains, so when Ruth Adeyemi pressed the damp mylar sheet against the rock, the first thing it caught was the bow. Thin as a hair, the line ran from the small archer's hand across the ochre, and she had to lift the sheet twice to be sure it was paint and not a crack. Her torch made the surface shine like wet slate. Four animals ran across the wall with their legs folded in mid-stride, and whoever had painted them had given the antelope far more care than the men.

Tomas, the guide, would not step onto the scree. He had grown up herding goats in the valley below and said his grandmother believed a hunt was not finished until the hunter had counted every animal. Ruth counted them again. The tallest archer stood beside the leaping buck with his bow drawn toward the herd's flank, but the arrow was missing, and a second, smaller figure had been scratched into the stone beneath him with no bow at all.

"That one is waiting," Tomas said. "Look where its face is turned." It faced the cave mouth, where the afternoon light came in low over the grass.

When Ruth rolled the tracing sheet that evening, the bow line came away clean, but the scratched figure had not left a mark on the mylar. She filed the sheet under unfinished and drove back down the switchbacks with the window open, listening for the sound of goats on the hill, and for anything that might be coming home.
