Man pushing a lawnmower tattoo on a scalp

Other · Colour · Photo

A small cartoon figure of a man in a blue cap, yellow top and blue shorts pushes a red lawnmower across a bald scalp. The outlines are bold and simple, with flat areas of colour and little shading. The tattoo sits near the centre of the head against grey stubble at the sides, on a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis Marsh had cut the green at Little Cawley for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had seen him stop for a cup of tea before the last stripe was done. So when the parish council announced the Golden Blade, a silver-plated trophy the size of a bread bin, Dennis entered before anyone asked him to. The rest of the village spent a fortnight pretending not to care.

His rival was Pauline Oakes, who kept a strip of lawn outside the post office with the fussiness of a jeweller. She hired a lad from Ipswich with a ride-on mower that cost more than Dennis's bungalow. On the morning of the judging Dennis wheeled out his old red mower, oiled the blades with his late wife's shaving brush, and set off across the green at a pace the judges later described as stately.

Halfway across, the grass box choked on wet clippings. Pauline's lad whooped and kept going. Dennis tipped the box, wiped his hands on his shorts, and turned round to check his line. Behind him the pale stripe ran straight as a ruler past the war memorial, past the bench, past the wheelbarrow, while the ride-on went round and round the duckpond in ever wider loops.

The judges gave the trophy to Dennis for the straightest cut they had ever measured. He set it on the mantelpiece beside a photograph of his wife and the old mower, and that evening his grandson drew him on the back of a cereal box, cap pulled low, pushing a machine across a field of green crayon, with the sun in one corner and GRANDAD WINS across the top in capitals.
