Grazing animal tattoo on a scalp
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a grazing animal, shown in side profile with its head lowered towards a few tufts of grass, sits on the top of a bald scalp. The linework is loose and sketchy, with soft grey shading on the body and darker strokes along the legs and head. The ink is entirely black and grey against reddened skin, and the photograph is taken from above, cropped to the head and white hair.

Now sit still, because the bit about the gate is the bit that matters. Your great-uncle Alf kept one goat in the bottom garden on Mill Row, a grey-brown billy with a beard like a bramble and a temper to match. He called it Parson because it looked down its nose at everyone who came up the path. Every Sunday it was let out to graze the verge by the allotments, and every Sunday it went straight for the cabbages instead, which is how the whole village came to know its face.

The summer the council dug up the pipes, the trench ran right across the verge, and the goat had nowhere to go but the rough strip of grass beside the railway cutting. Alf went down there each evening with a bucket and a stick, and he swore the animal grew thinner and prouder by the week. Then one evening the latch was left off, the bucket lay empty on the step, and Parson was gone. We found him at dusk, nose down in a few tufts of seeding grass at the very edge of the cutting, chewing as if he had paid for the lot.
Alf never did tell anyone what he said to that goat. He just stood by the rails with his cap in his hands until the light went. Then he walked it home, slowly, the way you would walk a friend who had had a fright.
