The moose came aboard at Lerwick with a battered canvas holdall and a firm opinion about the weather, which he shared with the galley cook before he had even found his bunk. Nobody on the Marigold Bell had ever seen an animal that size walk up a gangplank unaided, and Cookie Pryce spent the first watch asking the mate whether he was on the manifest. The mate said the manifest was a matter for the Lord, not the purser, and went back to his tea.

For nine days we ran through fog so thick the gulls walked on the rail. Every morning the moose stood at the bow with his antlers held high, squinting at the grey and muttering that the sun was out there somewhere, sulking behind a cloud like a lazy tenant. Cookie said he was mad. The purser said he was a shareholder. I said nothing, because I had seen him polish those antlers with a tea towel at four in the morning and I did not think a madman would be so tidy about it.

On the tenth day the fog thinned to milk and there it was, a small scratchy sun no bigger than a coin, poking through like it had been caught out of bed. The moose lifted one hoof, very slowly, as if to shake hands with a bishop. The sun flared once, bright as a struck match, and the whole crew let out a cheer loud enough to startle the gulls off the rail.

The moose turned, tipped his antlers at me, and said, in the calmest voice I have ever heard from livestock, "Told you." Then the cloud came back and he went below for his supper, which Cookie swore he had already paid for.
