A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Harrow found the bird on the ice block in the water trough the morning after the big frost, when the rest of the farm was still under a grey lid of sky. It was no taller than a milk churn lid is wide, black on the back and white at the front, with orange feet and a beak like a carrot cut at the tip. Her father said it was a gannet that had lost its wits, and her mother said leave the thing be before it died on her kitchen floor.

It would not eat the bread crusts or the chopped mangel. It took one herring from the cold barrel, swallowed it whole, then turned its head to the south road and stood there as if a cart was late. Every morning Maud broke the ice around the block with the hoof pick so it would not drown, and every morning the block was a little smaller, its edges running off into the trough like sugar in tea.

By the end of February there was only a slab the size of a Bible left, and the penguin stood on it with its feathers puffed against the wind. Maud walked the south road to the sea wall, and the bird never once looked at her. When she came back the trough was empty and the mud was printed with three small webbed marks, going towards the river, and the river was running brown and full of news.
