Penguin in a top hat on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small penguin wearing a top hat and holding a cane faces a floating bubble. The design uses clean black linework with solid black areas on the body and simple grey-toned shading on the belly. The tattoo sits alone on pale skin against a dark blue fabric background.

You have worked the booth at the Dover crossing long enough to know that most travellers arrive with their troubles already showing on their faces, so the penguin is a novelty. It stands on the far side of the glass with a passport tucked under one wing and a cane hooked over the other, and it waits with the patience of a bank manager. Above it a single soap bubble drifts up from nowhere and bobs against the strip light. Nobody else in the queue seems to think this odd. You do, but the form does not have a box for it.

"Purpose of visit?" you ask, because the form says so. The penguin tilts its top hat and produces a folded ticket for a lighthouse on a grey island where the cold is considered respectable. "Returning," it says, or perhaps you only imagine the word, because the bubble pops at that exact moment and the air smells faintly of brine. You reach for the stamp. Stamp it, you tell yourself, and let it go before the family behind lifts their suitcase onto your counter.

Instead you watch it walk through the gate, the cane tapping a tidy rhythm on the tiles. Nobody searches its bag. The bubble follows it out towards the car park, lower now and wobbling on the wind, and it reaches the kerb just as the coach pulls in. The penguin raises the hat an inch, which is the most courteous thing anyone has done at your booth in eleven years.

At the end of the shift you open the register to close the day. There, between a lorry driver's name and a woman with a parrot in a cage, is a line in your own neat handwriting: Penguin, one, admitted. The stamp is still dry on the desk beside it, and on the counter a single bead of water is drying where something light once burst.
