You won't believe what came up the stairs this morning. Dolores from flat 14 was carrying a cardboard box the size of a telly, and when I asked what was in it she lifted the lid like she was showing me a newborn. Inside was a penguin suit, blue as the Sunday swimming baths, with a yellow beak stitched on the front and two great yellow feet that would sink a rowing boat. Her Shannon is six and has talked about nothing else since the Christmas do at the community centre.

I told her the feet were a daft idea for a child who has to get up eleven floors, because the lift's been broken since October and the council keep saying it's being looked at. She laughed and said the stairs were the only thing in the block that had never let her down, which is more than I can say for the caretaker.

Then Shannon came out of 14 in the suit and stood in the corridor under the orange light. The hood had a little loop on top where a wire ran through for a bobble, and she'd pinned a red bow to the side of it, bright as the postbox at the bottom of Harcourt Road. She stood very straight and asked me if she looked like a proper penguin. I said she looked like a proper somebody. She went back in to show her gran, and I stood there with my shopping bags cutting into my fingers, thinking about the lift.

Anyway, she's got her school photo next week and she wants you to see it, so write back and tell me if you think she's too old for a penguin. I've said no, but I'm not the one who has to wear the feet.
