Smiling cartoon camera and film canister tattoo
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon camera in turquoise, purple and pink sits beside a yellow roll of film, and both objects have smiling kawaii faces with pink cheeks. The bold black outlines and flat fills are shown with striped purple shading on the camera's grip. The design is shown in colour on smooth skin with a plain background.

Sit closer, the rain's come under the awning and the cheese man has gone home, so it's only us and the pigeons now. You'll know the camera on the corner stall, the turquoise one with the pink buttons and the grin painted on its lens. Her name was Mabel, and she'd been waiting all spring for a picture worth taking. What she wanted was the wet cobbles at closing time, the umbrellas blooming like tulips and the gutters running gold under the lamps.

The trouble was her film. Ferris, a fat yellow canister with a face as round as a bun, had been shut in his tin since March, and he was sulking about it. "Film doesn't like the dark," the old woman who sold them told Mabel, tapping the tin. "He wants to be wound on and see something new." So Mabel clicked him into her back, pressed the little latch, and off they went into the rain, the two of them grinning at every puddle they passed.
They photographed the fishmonger shaking his apron, the boy selling balloons who had let go of all of them, and a dog asleep under a trestle table who never once opened his eyes. Ferris wound on with a happy little click after every shot. At the end of the roll, Mabel took one more, pointed at nothing in particular, and held the shutter until her lens went misty.
The prints came back from the chemist's a week later. Most were smudged, a few had a thumb in them, and the dog was still asleep. The last one showed the market from low down, the lamps stretched into stripes, and in the puddle at the bottom of the frame were two faces, both trying very hard not to laugh.
