The lift at Ferndale House stopped between the ninth and tenth floors with a shudder and a sigh, and Ruby Shah decided that if they were going to be stuck, they might as well be useful. She dug a purple eyeliner out of her coat pocket and started on the scratched steel panel above the buttons, drawing a cat with a ribbon the size of a dinner plate.

"That's not a cat," said Tomasz from the corner, where he had been sitting on his rucksack since the second floor. "Cats have whiskers. That's a bit of sellotape."

"She's a kitten. She's got a bow and everything." Ruby added a row of hearts above the cat's head, lopsided and pressing hard. "Her name's Mimi. She runs a bakery on the moon."

Tomasz didn't laugh, but he did shuffle over. His little sister had made him promise to bring back a hero, so he took the pencil without asking and drew a girl with red hair scooped into two bunches, eyes as wide as saucers, fists up as if she meant to win an argument with the lift itself. He gave her a cape, thought better of it, and gave her a daisy-shaped stripe of freckles instead. Ruby added a white flower at the bottom corner because a moon bakery needed a garden, and the two of them squeezed their drawings together until the steel looked like the back page of a comic.

When the doors finally juddered open on the tenth floor, a maintenance man in a hi-vis vest stared at the wall. "Who did this?" Ruby looked at Tomasz, Tomasz looked at the daisy, and neither of them said a word. The man sighed, found a cloth in his back pocket, and rubbed at the corner until the purple came away, but he left the cat alone, and she was still smiling at the lift when they walked out into the car park.
