Cartoon portrait with Danger Zone banner on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold cartoon portrait of a dark-haired man with blue eyes, wearing a grey suit and tie, sits above a banner reading DANGER ZONE. Orange clouds frame the head, and the thick black outlines are filled with flat, saturated colour. The design is centred on the arm with the banner running across the lower edge, and the background shows a printed line drawing of the same portrait.

Hal had been sent to recover a ledger from a dentist in Margate who had, through a series of misunderstandings, started selling stolen cufflinks to the Admiralty. The ledger was taped inside the dentist's drill case. Hal explained all of this in a murmur while thumbing the emergency button with the calm of a man ordering toast. Somewhere above us a bell rang, and a tinny voice promised the engineer was on his way, which Hal took as a personal insult to his timing.
When the doors finally eased open onto the fifth floor, a woman in a red mackintosh was waiting with a pistol that turned out to be a cigarette lighter shaped like one. Hal raised both hands and grinned. 'Margaret, you've cut your hair.' She had not cut her hair. She fired anyway, a puff of violet cologne that left him coughing and, to my astonishment, delighted.
The next morning the ledger was lying on my desk, the cufflinks were gone, and a Post-it in Hal's looping hand read only: Danger zone, Dennis. Enjoy the view.
