Black and grey traditional tattoo of a cartoon character with a pompadour, round glasses and a tear, above a banner reading CRY BABY, on a calf.

Crying cartoon character with CRY BABY banner

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon character with a tall pompadour, round glasses and a single tear sits above a curled banner that reads CRY BABY. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading give the figure form, with stippled texture on the hair and banner. The design is centred on the lower leg, with the banner running across the bottom of the composition.

Dear Ray, you'll laugh, but the lad from the flats on Ilderton Road came in again on Saturday with his mum's hand clamped on his shoulder, and he cried the whole way through his trim. Not loud, mind. Just one tear that rolled past his round specs and dropped off his chin onto the cape while Mr Pinkney worked the front of that quiff up into a wave like a breaking sea.

Mr Pinkney says the nerves are what keep the hair so stiff, that a calm head goes flat by teatime. I don't believe him. Last week a Teddy boy sat in the same chair, laughing at every snip, and by Monday his whole do had slumped like a wet loaf. The lad's brother calls him Cry Baby on the pavement, and I think the name stuck to him the way the pomade does, thick and proud and impossible to shift.

Today the boy came in dry-eyed for the first time. He sat down, stared at himself in the mirror, and asked Mr Pinkney to do it properly, the way it looked in the photo, the one where he's blubbing into a handkerchief. Mr Pinkney just shrugged and reached for the comb. The quiff stood up, but it looked wrong, like a house without its chimney smoke.

He left a sixpence on the glass shelf, damp at one edge where his cheek had been. I haven't the heart to wipe it off yet. Come home soon and tell me what you make of it, and bring that Brylcreem tin from Jersey.
