Suited man portrait with Danger Zone banner
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A bold cartoon-style portrait of a dark-haired man in a grey suit and tie, with blue eyes and a neutral expression, sits above a curled banner that reads DANGER ZONE. Thick black outlines and flat shading define the features, and a red line crosses the lettering. Orange cloud shapes sit behind the head, with the bright colours set against the pale skin of the arm, and sketched drawings of the same figure appear faintly in the background.

Dorothy Pilling had been stamping passports at Harwick Crossing for nineteen years, and she knew the look of a man who wanted to be waved through before he reached the glass. "Purpose of visit?" she asked.
"Lunch," he said. "With a man who isn't there."
She turned the passport over. It had no stamps, only a faded sticker of a lighthouse. Behind her the radio crackled with the night shift's usual nonsense about a lorry of frozen peas gone missing near Dunmore. She typed the name into the system and the screen flashed a red box: DANGER ZONE. Someone in the back office had been bored again.
Dorothy looked up. He was smiling the way a man smiles when he has already filed the paperwork on your life. "Shall I wait in the usual place?" he asked.
She stamped the page twice, hard, and slid it back under the glass. "The usual place is the car park, love. And mind the peas."
