Bambi and Thumper on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon fawn, Bambi, stands on a grey and tan rabbit, Thumper, with sparkles and light blue swirls behind them. The bold black outlines and flat fills give the design a cartoon look, with soft shading on the fawn's body. Warm oranges and browns contrast with the blues and greys across the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cage dropped with its usual shudder, and Nan Pease did not watch her grandson go down. She watched the lamp instead, the small bobbing light until the dark swallowed it. Danny was nine, too young for the pit and too proud to be told so, so he carried what he could. In his coat pocket was the lid of an old toffee tin, its paint worn to bare metal at the edges: a fawn on spindly legs, standing on a grey rabbit that never seemed to mind.

Below, the seam was wet and the air tasted of iron. Danny's job was only to carry tea cans to the face, but the roof had talked all morning, a low groan that came up through the soles of his boots. At the third junction the cage bell gave two flat notes and then nothing. The men at the face lifted their heads. Danny had watched his uncle do this many times, drumming a boot heel twice on the packed floor and waiting. Nobody answered. He drummed again, quick and cheeky, the rhythm Uncle Sid had taught him in the wash-house yard, the one the rabbit used when he wanted the whole forest to listen.

A pick rang back, then another. Dust hung in the lamplight like specks on a window, and somewhere a rope creaked and the cage began to move. When Danny came up into the grey afternoon, Nan was still at the pit head with her shawl pulled tight. She took the toffee lid from his fist, turned it over, and her mouth went soft. "You kept hold of him," she said, meaning the rabbit, and she tucked the tin back into his pocket before anyone else could see him shake.
