CatDog cartoon characters on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon characters CatDog, with a dog head and cat head joined to a single body that loops across the design. The linework is bold and black, with simple cel-style shading in orange, tan and brown, and the dog's nose and the cat's nose are picked out in purple and red. The design fills the centre of the frame against a plain skin background, with parts of other tattoos visible at the top and right edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the step, and keep your voice down, because the cat's asleep on the good side of the range and she'll not forgive us if we wake her. You know the story of the pair who came up the lane the week of the big frost? Dog at one end, cat at the other, and one body in between that neither of them would give up. Old Tom Pargeter swore they'd been stuck in a hedge together since the summer, and the hedge had grown round them.

They were no good at farming. The dog wanted the barn and the cat wanted the kitchen, and every morning the body set off in two directions at once, so the milk churn ended up in the ditch and half the hens ended up in the pond. Tom's wife gave up on them by Candlemas. Then came the night the fox got into the henhouse, and the dog head barked at the door while the cat head hissed at the window, and the body, stuck halfway between, ran round in a circle until it had worn a path through the snow that you can still see from the lane.

The fox sat on the fence and watched them go round and round. Then it lost interest and wandered off into the woods. The two heads looked at each other across the frozen yard, and for the first time in a year neither one spoke. The dog lowered its nose. The cat lowered its ears. They walked back to the kitchen together, which took most of an hour, and they have not agreed on anything since, except that the hens are theirs to guard.

So when you hear the back door rattle at night, don't go out. It's only them, arguing about the coal scuttle. Now pass me that mug, and mind the dog, he'll try to take your biscuit while the cat's looking the other way.
