Two hands with colourful neo-traditional tattoos on the backs: a cartoon robot holding a wrench on the left and a grinning green-capped face on the right.

Cartoon robot and grinning face on both hands

Neo-trad · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two hands are shown side by side against a black background, each carrying a large cartoon-style tattoo on the back. The left hand shows a green robot with a red eye and a wrench, set against orange swirling shapes, while the right hand shows a grinning face with a green cap, bared teeth and a small beard. The bold outlines, smooth shading and bright palette of red, orange, green and blue give the piece a playful, illustrative look.

Dear Tom,

The robot came out of the hay barn on Tuesday with a wrench over one shoulder and a dent in its head the shape of Dad's boot. Mum says it is no use for milking, but it can tighten a gate hinge quicker than any of us, and it hums while it works, some tune off the wireless with the words all wrong. We call it Copper, though its paint is more green than copper, because Dad said a robot ought to have a name that sounds like it could mend a boiler.

The scarecrow is another matter. Gran made him from feed sacks and stuffed him with the last of the straw, and Granddad's old cap went on his head before he died. Since the frost he has been grinning at the yard gate like he knows a secret about the ewes. Copper took against him at once. On Wednesday I found them squaring up by the water trough, the robot with its wrench raised and the scarecrow with his painted red mouth wide open, showing those two little fangs Gran stitched on by mistake.

Last night the ewes got out in the snow, and it was Copper who found them. It went down the lane following the orange glow of the lamp Gran hangs on the gatepost, and it stood in the drift until we came with the torch. This morning the scarecrow was propped on the gatepost with the wrench tucked under his arm, and nobody will say who put him there. Come home at Easter and see for yourself. Copper has been asking after you, in its way.

Love, Jess
