Feather and floral flash sheet

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A flash sheet of around twenty-five feather designs, many combined with roses, lotus-like blooms, beads, arrows and small dreamcatcher-style medallions. The designs use bold dark outlines with solid fills, and some feathers have fine detail and shading. Most designs are rendered in bright colours such as pink, orange, yellow, blue and green, with some in black and grey, set in separate arrangements across the white page.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the tar on that bench. This is about Ada Penhallow, who painted signs for the boats at Porthgwidden, and the feather that would not stay on paper.

She had a tin of colours from a dead man's chandlery, and every morning she tried to paint a gull's wing for the ferry's name board. Every morning the wing came out as a feather, a long pink one with a bead of gold at the quill, curling off the edge of the board as if it had somewhere better to be. Her father swore at it. The harbourmaster sent a letter. Ada scraped it off with a knife and started again, and again it came back, with orange at the tip and a blue ring round the shaft, and once a wild rose tangled in the barbs.

In the spring a stranger came down the steps from the church with a bundle of feathers under his arm and asked for her by name. He said nothing about gulls. He only took one feather from the bundle, laid it on her bench beside her painted one, and said the two of them had been apart a long time. Then he walked off towards the breakwater and was never seen in the town again.

The next morning the ferry sailed with a new name board, and on it, bright enough to read from the quay, was a feather with a lotus at its root, and beneath it the words Ada had never painted: Come home by the tide.
