They came up the yard steps at ten to five, the way the flour lorry used to, and I stopped pretending I hadn't seen them after the first week. The big one led. Its shell was the green of a bottle held up to a window, and it walked like a man who had somewhere to be and was already late for it. The little one came behind, always a step short, its head swinging from side to side as if the whole bakery were a rumour it wanted to check.

Then the proving cupboard door stuck one morning and I was on my knees with a spatula and a bad temper, and the small one nudged a crust of seeded rye across the flags with its nose and pushed it up against my boot. The big one watched from the drain cover as if taking notes for later.

By March they had a routine. I left the ends of the brown loaves on the step, cut thick, and they ate in silence while the sky over the chimney pots went from ink to pewter. One morning the small one stopped halfway across the yard and would not go on. The big one walked back, lowered its head, and waited until the little one had finished its crumb. Then they went down the steps together into the canal mist, the big shell first and the small one close behind, both still green long after the light came up.
