Before the bakery lamps were lit, Fenner the squirrel came down the wall of Hollin Yard with one great bulging eye fixed on the back window. Across his shoulders he carried a leafy stalk of hemp, green as pond weed, pulled from the rope-walk's drying rack. Mrs Ashby had hung it there to dry for twine, and Fenner had decided that anything so green was his by right.

Wenna Ruck was already at the ovens, forearms white with flour, when his claws scraped the sill. She had heard him scratching for a week and had been waiting. "You'll take that out of my yard," she said. Fenner set the stalk down on the flagstones with great ceremony, showed her his buck teeth, and pointed at the proving dough with his tail.

The old people say a squirrel who brings a gift before dawn is owed one loaf. So Wenna tore the heel off the first batch, still steaming, and set it on the step. Fenner sat on his haunches and ate it in small furious bites, one eye on her and one on the sky, which was greying over the chimneys.

When the sun came up, the stalk was gone and so was the squirrel, but a single leaf lay curled on the step beside the crumbs. Wenna pressed it flat under her thumb and went back to the ovens. The rope-walk never did find its hemp, and the loaves that morning rose higher than any she had ever shaped.
