Dear Nan, I'm writing this on the back of a galley order sheet because my bunk is too close to the hatch to sit up straight. Cook Maddox Penrose has finally pinned the bear above the stove, and nobody on the Brightwater will say a word against it. It's a green bear with a round belly badge, a leaf inside the circle that Maddox swears is a sunflower, and five balloons tied to its paws. The balloons are the trouble. Whoever painted the sign on the wheelhouse door had the letters in a muddle, so the words on them are ones nobody in the mess will read out loud to the purser.

Teague, the youngest deckhand, says the bear came aboard in a canvas kitbag from a fairground in Whitby, and that it has never once been wet. He's wrong about that. On Thursday the swell off the Dogger Bank came over the rail like a freight train, and the bear went straight off its hook and into the bilge water by the pantry drain. I fished it out with the ladle. Maddox dried it on the oven rail one balloon at a time and fussed over the string like a surgeon.

Now it sits above the flour bin looking very pleased with itself, and every time the boat rolls the balloons swing out and back as if they're waving at the sea. Maddox says that's the only proper welcome a ship has ever given him, and I think he's right. I'll post you a postcard from Rotterdam with a bear on it, if they've got one. Love, Peg.

P.S. The balloons have stayed up through three gales. Nobody can explain it.
