Cartoon rat holding a wooden spoon on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon rat stands upright against a tall wooden spoon, with its front paws gripping the handle and its ears spread out to one side. The rat is shaded in soft browns and greys with pink details, while the spoon is rendered in warm ochre and tan with subtle grain. The design sits centrally on the lower leg against plain, lightly freckled skin.

The rat was already at the proving drawers when I came in at four, standing on an upturned crate with a wooden spoon taller than she was, stirring the cold batter Dennis had left in the steel bowl. I should have shouted. Instead I stood in the doorway in my wet coat and watched her lean her whole weight into the spoon, ears spread wide to catch the hum of the extractor fan, as if the bowl might answer back.

Dennis had tried traps in March and given up after the third one came back empty and a seeded tin loaf had been hollowed out like a canoe. Nobody on the early shift believed in her except Nkechi, who left a saucer of milk by the flour bin and said the rat had never once touched the sugar, only the salt, and only enough to season what she was making.
By the time the sky over the car park turned the colour of weak tea, she had shaped a pale, lopsided dough that rose better than anything Dennis had made that week. She laid the spoon across the rim of the bowl the way you'd rest a pen, looked at me with her small dark eyes, and went back into the vent behind the oven.
On Monday the bread was gone from the rack, and so was the spoon. I found it on the back windowsill the next morning, scrubbed clean and laid flat, with a single poppy seed pressed into the grain of the handle. Dennis said it was a bribe. Nkechi said it was a receipt. I put the kettle on and left the seed where it was.
