Cartoon teapot outline on the ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a smiling cartoon teapot with a raised lid knob, a curled handle and a scalloped base, drawn in a single black outline. The linework is even and uniform with no shading, and the plain skin around it fills most of the frame. The image is a close, slightly angled photo of the side of the torso.

The teapot had sat on the potting shed sill since the Whitsun fête, grinning at Maureen Oakes every time she reached for the trowel. She had paid fifty pence for it off a trestle table, from a man who swore it had come from his late brother's kitchen and had never once been used for tea. It had a bobbled lid, a handle that curled over like a question, and a little scalloped foot that made it look as if it might tap its toes.

Terry from plot fourteen did not share her view. "It's taking up a whole shelf, Mo," he said, lifting it by the handle and carrying it out to the compost heap as though it were a dead pigeon. By the following Saturday it had made its way back, because Maureen had fetched it every time, and by the third Saturday they were having the same argument over the hedge with the kettle going between them.
She stopped arguing in June, when the runner beans came in faster than anyone could pick them and the teapot began to fill up, one bean at a time, each propped against its spout. Terry noticed. He noticed the beans, then the seed packets stacked in its belly, then the sweet peas Maureen had tucked into the gap under the lid as if it were a vase.
On the last Saturday of the month he came up the path with a flask and two mismatched mugs and set the teapot squarely on the bench. "Don't know why I ever wanted rid of it," he said, and he poured out two cups of stewed tea. The teapot kept grinning at them both over the rim of the mug, and neither of them had the heart to tell it to stop.
