Tibbet Marr had dug up the same bed three times that spring, and three times the tiger had been lying in the hole when he came back, chin on his paws, tail laid out across the path like a draught excluder.

"Those are my beans," said Tibbet.

"That is my bed," said the tiger, Ossory, who had never once in his life been told what he could lie on. "The beans are just where I put the sun."

Tibbet looked at the tail, which was striped black and grey and as long as a cricket pitch, and he saw that it went under the gate, over the wall and into the next parish. Nobody could say how far it went. Old Mrs Penhallow at the shop swore she had once tripped on it in Truro.

So Tibbet made a bargain the way his grandfather had taught him, spitting on his palm first. He would sow the beans in the tiger's hollow, and if the tiger kept his tail to himself until they climbed, the beans would climb it. By August they had wound up every stripe and hung their flowers off the tip, and the tiger, who had grown quite fond of the tickle, purred so loudly the neighbours complained. Tibbet stood at the gate with his hands on his hips and raised two fingers at him, the way you do when you have won and do not want to say so. The tiger grinned. He had been waiting all summer for someone to be that rude to him.
