The hall still smelt of floor polish and warm squash, and Gemma Holt had the photograph out before I reached the trestle table. She held it up like evidence. Two girls sat in a teacup at the Hartley Road summer fete, one with blue bunches, one with a pink bow bigger than her head, both grinning as though the cup were a fairground ride.

We had been ten. The cup belonged to Mrs Pascoe, who ran the tombola and kept her good china in a cupboard the rest of us were forbidden to open. Gemma and I took turns being the pink one, because the pink one got to hold the saucer. Nobody mentioned that the saucer was the bit that broke, or that Mrs Pascoe found a painted rose fragment under the tombola table and never once mentioned it to our mothers.

Gemma's bow had slipped by the time she finished her wine. 'You never did say sorry,' she said. 'For the saucer.' I told her I had been waiting thirty years to be asked. She laughed so loudly the caterer looked up from the urn, and for a minute we were both ten again, sharing one cup and one stolen biscuit.

Later, when the bunting came down and the chairs went onto their stacks, I found the rose chip in my coat pocket, where it had lived since 1994 without my ever deciding to keep it. I put it on the table beside the photograph, a small pink curl among the crumbs, and for once nobody asked me to explain.
