Cartoon unicorn in kimono with blossoms
Japanese · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon unicorn character with a black mane and white body wears a patterned kimono, with two hair sticks in its head and a long tail. Pink and orange cherry blossoms surround the figure on a pale skin background. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat areas of colour and small highlights, and the design sits diagonally across the side of the torso.

Nobody in the village of Kasumi believed a unicorn could sit properly in a kimono, so I decided to prove them wrong by sitting on the schoolhouse roof until somebody handed me one. Fumi the seamstress came up the ladder with her pins in her mouth and a bolt of indigo cloth over one shoulder, grumbling that my tail was a hazard to the eaves.

She measured me around the middle, which took a while, because I kept breathing out to see whether she would give up. Her fingers were quick and cold. She slid two lacquered hair sticks through my mane, borrowed, she said, from the noodle stall, and told me the blossoms stitched on the cloth were the ones that would fall on the road to the shrine at the end of the month.
Then the wind came up off the hill and the cherry trees let go all at once. Petals hit the roof, the lanterns, the cloth on my back. Fumi stopped swearing mid-word. Children ran out with their arms open, and for the length of one gust the whole lane was pink and orange, and nobody could tell which blossoms were painted and which were real.
I did not take the kimono off for the festival. I did not take it off for the rest of the summer either. Fumi called that vanity. I called it a fair price for the one day the petals chose me.
