Cartoon wolf in a yellow hat

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A cartoon wolf with a narrowed eye and a sly expression wears a yellow hat with a black band and a green feather, a green bow tie and a yellow coat. The outlines are bold and black, with flat fills and simple shading on the fur and hat. The palette is limited to yellow, green, red, black and grey, arranged against a plain background within a thin border.

You know Harcourt House lift has been dead since Tuesday, so when the Okafor boy comes puffing up to the eleventh floor with his mum's purse, you already have the yellow hat tipped low and the green feather freshly tucked into its black band. Nobody in a block like this checks a man's face on the stairs. They check his shoes, and yours are polished like a bank manager's.

"Lift fund," you tell him, rattling the tin. "Fifty pence a ticket, and the lift is back by Friday." Mrs Okafor's boy has the look of a lad who reads things. He wants a receipt. You write one on the back of a gas bill in your neatest hand and draw a little wolf's head in the corner, because the kids on the third floor go mad for that sort of thing, and he goes back down the stairs holding the ticket like a winning lottery card.

On the ninth floor a woman in a dressing gown asks whether the fund is registered. You say the council is sorting the paperwork. She laughs and tells you the council has been sorting that lift since 1998. Then she hands you a ten-pound note and asks for two tickets, and you feel, for the first time in a long while, a little ashamed of how easy it has all been.

At the ground floor the lift doors shudder open on their own, lit and humming, a handwritten OUT OF ORDER sign dangling from one handle in someone else's careful capitals. You step in anyway, press G, and ride down with the tin under your coat, the feather bent flat against the glass.
