Realistic drawing of a howling wolf head in profile, shaded in browns, oranges and black, with mirrored handwritten text above it.

Howling wolf head in profile

Realism · Mixed · Flash

A wolf's head in profile is shown mid-howl, muzzle raised and mouth open, with the fur rendered in fine directional strokes. The shading moves from near-black and white highlights to warm brown and orange tones, giving the fur volume and texture. Two lines of mirrored handwritten text sit in the upper right corner against a plain white background.

Dear Nell,

The generator cut out again at Lowestoft, so forgive the state of this paper. I'm writing by the light of the Wurlitzer's bulb, which keeps flickering as if it's thinking better of something. Dad says the wolf has been quiet since we left the coast, but I know better. He stands at the back of his cage with his nose to the gap in the boards and waits for the moon. When it clears the dodgems he throws his head back and lets go of everything he's held in all day.

Last night the whole midway heard him. Mrs Pargeter came out of the candyfloss tent in her curlers swearing she'd never heard a dog sing in tune. Ronnie the strongman said it was the most honest noise he'd heard since the war. I didn't say anything. I was holding the lantern up to the mirror in the ghost train, trying to copy the words Dad scratched on the back of his ticket book, because he writes everything backwards now and insists it's the only way the wolf will read it.

The ticket book says: Howl in the night, I am not the one who was caged. I've pinned it over my bunk where you'd see it. I think he means the wolf, but I've started to suspect he means himself.

Come to Norwich when you can. Bring the good scissors and some lamp oil, and if you see the travelling chemist, tell him the wolf's teeth are still wet with rain and he needs to stop asking.

Your loving sister, Jo
