Cascading stars and dots on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A cascade of five-pointed stars, some solid black and some outlined with white centres, runs diagonally down the leg. Fine scattered dots trail between the larger stars, suggesting movement. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the design fills the length of the calf against a plain skin background.

Dear Ruth,

I nearly didn't come to the reunion, and then I saw Mr Ashby's name on the programme with the spelling still wrong, and I thought, well, somebody ought to correct it. Nobody did. We stood in the sports hall under the same basketball hoops and nobody mentioned the telescope.
You remember the telescope. Brass, borrowed from the grammar school, kept in the cupboard behind the stage. You and I signed out the key every Thursday and lost it twice. The night we finally got Jupiter's moons in focus, you sketched what you saw on the back of a dinner register: five stars, some filled in black and some left hollow with a white centre, and a fine trail of pinpricks running down the page as if someone had flicked a pen across it.
Last week a box arrived from Ashby's sister. Inside was the register, your sketch still there, the pencil gone soft at the edges. I've written to the council to ask whether the observatory roof can be saved. It can't, they say, but I'm sending them the drawing anyway, in case it helps them remember what the place was for.
Come to the next one. Bring the key, if you still have it.
Love, Pauline
