Matching star swirl tattoos on two calves

Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo

Two near-identical tattoos sit side by side on the lower legs, each showing a large shooting star with a curling tail, a cloud-like swirl and a scatter of small stars. The linework is thin and black, with the larger stars filled in orange on the left and purple on the right. The photo is taken straight on with the two designs centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are fourteen the August the stars come down over Skerry Head, and your sister Nell refuses to sleep through it. Your father has gone across on the Tuesday boat for a new wick and a box of tea, so the light is yours to mind until he is back. You climb the iron stairs with a flask of cocoa and a tin of felt tips, because Nell has decided the sky needs colouring in.

The meteors come in bunches after midnight, sparks thrown across the black water. Each time one streaks, Nell sketches its tail in purple across the logbook margin, and you answer in orange, a star at the head of every tail and a scatter of dots where it burned out. "If we don't write them down," she says, "nobody will ever know they were up there."

By the time the fog rolls in, the margins run from the top of the page to the bottom, and the lamp sweeps over you both every twenty seconds, painting you white before it leaves you to the dark. You stop counting. You start drawing the swirl the last one left behind, a looping cloud of tail that keeps curling long after the sky has gone quiet.

Your father comes back on the Thursday boat, shaking rain from his coat at the foot of the stairs. He opens the logbook expecting weather and finds falling stars instead, two colours, two hands, and a note in Nell's careful print: Light kept. Nothing missed.
