Black fine-lined castle silhouette above the word Dream in script, tattooed on the top of a bare foot in a bath.

Castle and Dream lettering on the top of a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest in water, with a black tattoo on the top of the right foot. It shows a castle silhouette with a dome-like arc behind it and a sun or moon shape, with the word Dream in black script beneath. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the photo is taken from above with the feet centred in the frame.

Dear Ottilie, the sign-painter came up from Harrowgate on Tuesday with a cart full of tins and a temper to match. Lord Aldous wanted the castle of Vell painted on the gatehouse board, its towers stacked like a child's bricks against the moon, and beneath it the one word he would not let anyone spell differently: DREAM, in a loop that trailed off the edge. The painter, a thin man called Possel, told me the loop was the hard part. Any fool can draw a tower, he said, but a word that runs past the end of its own sentence needs a steady hand.

He was up the ladder three days. I held the lamp for him at dusk, because the light goes early over the Vell valley and the castle throws its shadow down the hill like a dropped glove. Each evening the moon came up behind the glass dome above the old chapel, and Possel would stop, brush dripping, and say the moon was the only thing in the picture nobody had told him to paint. So he left a gap for it, a pale round hole the size of a thumbnail where the board showed bare.

On the last night I asked him what the gap was for. He said the moon would fill it when it rose, and it did, exactly, as if it had been waiting for someone to show it where to sit. I have been thinking about that since. We keep the lamps lit up there so the sign can be read from the road, but I suspect the castle only needs the word once the moon has gone to bed. Write back soon and tell me the bakery still owes you a loaf. Your brother, Tobias
