Colour sunflower tattoo with black outlines and a dotted centre, in a botanical style, on a leg resting in bath foam.

Sunflower tattoo on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A sunflower is tattooed on the outer side of a leg that is partly submerged in white bath foam. The bloom has bold black outlines, with orange, peach and yellow petals shaded lightly toward the edges. The dark brown centre is filled with fine curved linework, and the design fills most of the frame against the pale skin.

Nobody in Scarrow Hythe had grown a flower taller than a gutter until the Pell girl brought seeds back from the Lisbon boats. They were black and striped like a badger's back, and old Mags Tolley said they would never stand up to the wet north wind. The girl planted them anyway, in a row along the sea wall where the spray could reach them.

By August the heads hung over the wall like suns that had lost their way. Each morning they swung east to meet the light coming up off the water, and each evening they swung back, slow as a church clock. Mags said the flowers were faithful. The fishermen said they were only hungry. The girl said nothing, but she went down to the wall at dusk and counted the spirals in the middle of the nearest head, the way her father had taught her to count the knots in a line.

Her husband's boat, the Marion, was due in on the evening tide. The tide came and went, and so did the next one. On the fourth night the largest bloom turned not east but west, out past the harbour mouth, and it stayed turned. Mags came down with a lantern and stood beside her in the cold. "It's looking at something," Mags said. The girl said she knew.

The Marion came in on the sixth morning with her mast cracked and one man short, and the girl was on the wall before the rope was thrown. She cut the biggest head that afternoon and hung it upside down from the kitchen beam to dry. When she took it down in October, every seed had settled into a ring, and each ring turned the same way, toward the door.
