Tomas had carved the ring from the hard black wood of a fallen larch, and it took him the whole of the hay month to get the hole true. "They are the mountains that stand over this village," Tomas said. "Seen from the church step, the eastern ridge has three peaks and a fourth that hides behind them."
The father squinted, then set the ring on the table between the bread and the salt. "Then tell me which peak you will climb when the first snow shuts the road."
Tomas said the lower one, where the sheep go. The old man laughed and said that was the answer of a man who would never leave his own door. Anna, who had been listening from the stove, came over, took the ring, and pushed it onto her own finger, where it sat loose as a promise. "He will climb whichever one I point at," she said.
They married at the first frost. The ring turned on her finger for forty years, and every spring she walked up to the church step and counted the peaks through its hole. Every spring there were four, though the fourth was always hiding.
